What does our annual budget hysteria mean to the average citizen? I think that at its worst, it means very little, or at its best, it’s just another load of misinformation.

The right wing is complaining that the White House wants to spend like a drunken liberal, and the left is beginning to rally the faithful with a war cry that every worthwhile program will disappear by next Tuesday.

More Money for Job Seekers
When the average person hears the drumbeat that the budget has a $500 billion dollars deficit, they can only think of how, if in their own personal budget was this much in debt, they would never think of spending more money, no matter how good the idea was . But the House of Representatives just approved of an extra $6.7 billion for an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits. So if you’re one of the millions about to run out of unemployment benefits, get off the couch and investigate this new free money. Contact your Congressperson or Senator to see what the status is of that legislation called HR 3030 (go to www.congress.org to find your representative).

Don’t Wait ’til 2006 for Free Drugs
Or, if you are a senior having trouble paying for your Viaga or any other prescription drug, you don’t have to worry about how much in premiums you are going to pay for in the new Medicare Prescription drug program that only pays a portion of your drugs costs anyway, and doesn’t even start until 2006. There are current programs at state governments and even from the drug companies themselves where you can be making up to $40,000 a year, at any age, and get all of your prescription drugs for free right now. (Go to http://www.phrma.org/pap/ and find what drugs you can get for free now).
100,000 New Jobs
And if you are looking for a job, why would you ever consider looking to the government for work? Our budget hysteria sounds similar to a news story about Black and Decker laying off 1,000 workers. It sort of makes it seem like a stupid place to look for work. But, in fact, the Bush administration, in last 3 years, added 75,000 new federal workers. The prior administration eliminated over 300,000 workers. So if you are looking for a job, it seems even more stupid to go to Walmart who only has 1.3 million positions it has to keep filled, when the government has over 15 million positions it has to keep filled. And, I’m sure the government offers better pension and health care benefits and won’t lock you in the store at night, unless maybe you’re working in a nuclear missile silo! (Go to www.govengine.com to locate your federal, state and local government offices and find out who is hiring).

Over 90% Won’t Change at All
Many of the problems average Americans face today have nothing to do with the headlines that are about the budget. This budget doesn’t even start for 8 more months. And fortunately, or unfortunately, after all the noise stops, there is a 90% chance that 90% of the current programs will remain at the same funding level or be even higher.

So quit believing in the misleading headlines and go out and keep checking out those free money programs like the ones below….

Working Capital for Small Businesses…
