Ask
Lesko…
…
Joanna submitted this week’s question:
“
I have two questions about government grants: first, is there a cap
on government grants that you can receive in a years’ time, and
second, do you have to claim government grants on your tax returns?”
Answer: Good questions.
I am sure you are not the only one looking for these answers. 1) There
normally is no cap on the number of grants you
can receive from the government. There may be occasions if you apply
for a grant at a number of organizations for the same project that
one or more of these organizations will want you to return the money
if you get the money elsewhere. But this is something you should never
worry about when you are applying for grants. Just apply to 100 places
if you can. The worst that can happen is that everyone wants to give
you the money! At that point you can see which of them wants their
money back. This is a wonderful problem to have, so don't give it another
thought until you are in that wonderful predicament. 2) Most
government grants do not have to be included as income on your tax
return. If you get a grant for starting a business, you will be buying
things with the money you receive and as a result will not have to
pay taxes because you spent it on business expenses. If you ever have
a tax concern the organization giving you the money will be able to
tell you if it is taxable. But like the question above, it is a good
question, but don't worry about it until they give you the money. It
is a nice problem to have.
