Lessons
Taught Me About Success…
I just came back from a family vacation in Arizona learning
how to fly glider planes. I can’t remember when
I’ve
been more scared. Sitting at the end of a piece of rope
being towed by an airplane…. taken a mile up into
the air and being let go. Sure, I was not alone in the
plane, but I was supposed to learn how to fly it. Everything
I did was wrong. Every time I tried to correct for something,
it got worse. With every touch of the stick or peddles,
I felt I would cause the plane to crash. I was holding
on for dear life, hoping that something would make me
feel like I was in some kind of control. I couldn’t
even turn without thinking I would put the plane into
a tail spin and crash! After 3 flights the first day,
the third flight was no better than the first.
While driving to the airport on the second day, I could
not figure out why I was doing this. There were so many
easier things to do back at the resort---golf,
tennis, health spa, or even go online and work---things
that I was a whole lot better at! But I kept driving.
When I got up in the air, things got even worse. Besides
still not having any control over the plane and still
being scared as hell, this time I also got sick to my
stomach! It could have been nerves or heat sickness,
or whatever. After that I went back to the resort to
rest
and play golf.
On day 3, I could not believe that I was still driving
back to the airport…. It seemed stupid that I was
putting myself through this torture again. But this was
something that I just wanted to see if I could do.
This time in the air, it clicked! It was like riding
a bike; you don’t really understand how to balance
yourself, you just do it. AND I FINALLY GOT IT. I let
my instincts take over and trusted myself. I finally
had some control over the plane. I even started to enjoy
the scenery. I WAS FLYING A PLANE FOR THE FIRST TIME
IN MY LIFE! By day 4, I was even landing!
What a great lesson on hanging in there and trusting
in yourself. It seems that we can do so many more things
in life if we just keep on going and believe in ourselves.
