Q: Where do I get help with a legal problem?

A: We live in the greatest democracy in the world and you don't have to pay a lawyer $200 an hour in order to get justice. If you understand the system, you can find a government agency that regulates the person who is giving you a hard time and get your justice for FREE. If an insurance company does not pay a claim, you can contact your state insurance commissioner and they will fight your insurance company for you, for free. If a car dealer does not treat you fairly, you can contact your state attorney general and they will get you justice with the car dealer. If your ex-company is giving you less than you thought with your pension money, a Department of Labor official will contact them to ensure you get justice. Congress has even set up an office to fight the IRS for you if you feel mistreated. It's called the Problem Resolution Center.

What is nice about these organizations is that businesses like your insurance company are more afraid of the government than they are of your lawyer, so you are more likely to get a settlement in your favor. You see, the worst a company has to lose when they fight with a lawyer is that they have to pay what they owe you anyway. But if they fight and lose with the government, the government can put them out of business.

A good place to start finding the free legal help you need is to contact your state capital operator located in your state capital because most business regulation is handled at the state level.

(My books that best speak to the subject are "Free Legal Help" and "Free Stuff For Busy Moms.")
