Q: Where's the money for people with disabilities?

A: A woman from Virginia called me up one day and told me that she, at 42 years old, received $15,000 to complete her degree because the government considered the fact that she was suffering from low self esteem as a disability! Would you ever believe that the government has a program for people suffering from low self-esteem? I was surprised.

There is a complex web of money and help for people with disabilities. Many states, as well as the U.S. Small Business Administration, offer financial assistance for people with disabilities to start businesses. Medicare offers $1,000 in cash as a reimbursement for Medicare premiums. Free job training money is available. Help in determining how the latest technology can help your disability is available in every state. Some even help with financing. Free legal help is available, along with free medical care, free seeing eye dogs, free camps, free computers, and even free wheelchairs. It is just the beginning.

There are hundreds of places for money and help for people with disabilities and it is impossible for any one office to know them all. The best starting places are your state office that deals with disability issues and state Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

(My book that best speaks to this subject is "Free Stuff For Women's Health, Fitness and Nutrition." Even though the title says "Women," it covers a wide range of disability programs that any gender can use. "Free Money To Change Your Life" has a complete listing of programs that people with disabilities can use to help their professional life.)
