Q: Where's the money for scholarships and other funds to go to college?

A: It's going to take some work for you to get a handle on all the money available for college. Remember one important fact: you can't just apply to a few places and expect to get the money you need. It's like looking for a job. You don't apply to just one or two places and wait for them to hire you. The more doors you knock on, the more likely you will get a job, and the more programs to which you apply, the more likely you will get the money you need for college.

Start with the federal government. They have the most money and it's all in a book I copy from called The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. It is available in most public libraries. Contact your state department of higher education in your state capital. Every state has a bunch of programs for people living in their state and this office can provide you with a list. Then, start the search for private money. You will have to use as many sources as possible. No one seems to have it all. Go to the library and look through a number of scholarship books. If you are on the web, search through scholarship web sites. Keep searching and keep applying. It is not unreasonable to apply to 20 to 50 programs for money.

(My books that best speak to the subject are "Free Money to Change Your Life" and "Free College Money and Training For Women.")
